Syria slams Israel for ‘chaos’ after massacre of Druze civilians

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa claimed slammed recent Israeli strikes on Syria in a televised speech on Wednesday, accusing the Jewish State of sowing havoc in the country and pledging that his administration would protect Druze civilians.

“We reject any attempt to drag you into hands of an external party,” al-Sharaa, who is also known by his nom de guerre Muhammed al-Julani, said in the speech, addressing Druze citizens.

“We are not among those who fear the war. We have spent our lives facing challenges and defending our people, but we have put the interests of the Syrians before chaos and destruction,” he added, referencing Israeli air strikes.

The Israeli attacks aimed at stop the ongoing slaughter of Druze civilians by Syrian military forces, as government-aligned forces killed at least 100 residents of Sweida, in southern Syria.

“The Israeli entity resorted to a wide-scale targeting of civilian and government facilities,” al-Sharaa continued.

Those attacks triggered a “significant complication of the situation and pushed matters to a large-scale escalation, except for the effective intervention of American, Arab, and Turkish mediation, which saved the region from an unknown fate,” he added.

In recent days, Israel attacked Syrian military sites and assets, after militias affiliated with the Syrian government massacred members of the Druze minority group.

Around 100 Druze are believed to have been murdered in the last two days, with videos circulating on social media depicting Syrian soldiers humiliating and torturing Druze civilians.

On Wednesday, at least 1,000 Druze who hold Israeli citizenship — many of them armed — illegally crossed the border from the Jewish State into Syria, in an attempt to aid their brethren.

Druze civilians from Syria were also reported to have run across the border into Israel, hoping to reunite with relatives in the Golan Heights town of Majdal Shams.

While some Druze clerics have agreed to a ceasefire with the Syrian government, other religious leaders pointed to the recent slaughter as a reason not to trust al-Sharaa and his administration.

“There cannot be an accord or negotiations with these armed groups that call themselves a government,” Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, an influential Druze cleric in Syria, said in a media statement.
