Iran and the United States have quietly resumed talks aimed at de-escalating tensions between the two countries and reaching a new accord on Iran’s nuclear program, according to multiple media reports on Wednesday.

A report published by Israel Hayom, which cited multiple unnamed sources, said that the talks are being brokered by Oman, with Iran being represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and the US by President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

The sources claimed that the talks are focused on three key issues: the future of Iran’s nuclear program, its ballistic missile program, and the government crackdown on anti-regime protesters.

While Iran has reportedly shown flexibility regarding the future of its uranium enrichment activities, Tehran is said to be refusing to accept American demands regarding its ballistic missile arsenal and the protest movement.

Iran, according to the report, has defended its development and production of ballistic missiles, arguing that they are needed to deter Israel.

With regard to the use of deadly force against protests, Iran said that the matter is a domestic issue.

Araghchi denied the report, telling the state media outlet Fars that Iran has not been in contact with the United States lately.

Iran’s foreign minister also denied claims by President Trump that Tehran has sent overtures to the US to resume negotiations.

“There was no contact between me and Witkoff in recent days, and no request for negotiations was made from us,” Araghchi said, while acknowledging that intermediaries have been “holding consultations.”

“Our stance is clear, negotiations don’t go along with threats and talks can only take place when there are no longer menaces and excessive demands.”
