Nineteen-year-old student Dvir Sorek, who was found stabbed to death in Gush Etzion in the Judea region on Thursday, was the grandson of a man who had been murdered in a Palestinian terror attack in 2000.

Rabbi Binyamin Herling, who was 64 at the time, was shot and killed during a hike near Shechem in Samaria, when Dvir was only three months old.

The terror attack took place at the beginning of what became known as the Second Intifada (Uprising), which by 2005 would claim the lives of some 1,000 Israelis.

Dvir was studying in a yeshiva in Gush Etzion as part of a program which combines army time with religious studies.

Rabbi Herling , who served in the military in the paratrooper corps, was among the founders of the prominent Kerem B’Yavneh yeshiva. He was considered a leading figure in the religious Zionist movement.
