US Congresswoman compares US-Mexico border to Israeli ‘oppression’ in Gaza

“Do you know what I saw at the border? I saw Gaza,” Tlaib told the American Muslims for Palestine conference.

In an address over the weekend, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) compared the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border to that of Gaza and Israel.

“Do you know what I saw at the border? I saw Gaza,” said Tlaib, the first Palestinian American woman in Congress, during her keynote address on Saturday at the American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) conference in Chicago. “When you think about the border, you have to got to understand how interconnected the oppression in Palestine is with the oppression taking place at the border.”

She also said that she’s advocating for clean water in her Michigan district and “fighting for clean water in Gaza.”

More than 3,500 people were at the three-day event, according to organizers.

Tlaib’s comments recalled the reference made in June by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to immigrant detention centers at the U.S. southern border as concentration camps, employing imagery of the Nazi atrocities.

Another speaker at the AMP conference, Linda Sarsour, a surrogate for the Democratic presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and a former leader of the Women’s March, equated the State of Israel to white supremacy.

She later tweeted that she was referring to the Nation-State Law passed by the Knesset in 2018.

Tlaib used her appearance at the AMP convention “to pitch for intersectional politics, equating problems facing Palestinians to systemic oppression facing black people in America. AMP is a radical group that opposes Israel’s existence,” tweeted Adam Milstein, Chairman of the Board at the Israeli American Council (IAC).

The congresswoman joined “other vile anti-Semites as keynote speaker at ‘American Muslims for Palestine (AMP)’ convention in Chicago where they promoted new and old anti-Semitic tropes,” Milstein added in his social media posts.
