U.S. President Donald Trump apologized to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh for “the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure,” referring to uncorroborated sexual abuse charges that resulted in a heated six-week-long debate over his nomination.

Kavanaugh was confirmed Saturday by the Senate in a 50-48 vote.

“I’ve been hearing that now they’re talking about impeaching a brilliant jurist, a man that did nothing wrong, a man that was caught up in a hoax that was set up by the Democrats using the Democrats’ lawyers, and now they want to impeach him,” Trump said at Kavanaugh’s swearing-in ceremony at the White House on Monday.

The allegations against the nominee were “all made up, it was fabricated and it was a disgrace,” Trump stated.

“Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation, not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception,” he said. “What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process.

A man or woman in this country “must always be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.”
