President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the recipients of the 2017 Fake News Awards, a faux accolade he established to shame news outlets he says are biased against him.
“2017 was a year of unrelenting bias, unfair news coverage, and even downright fake news. Studies have shown that over 90% of the media’s coverage of President Trump is negative,” the awards’ description read.
The New York Times’ Paul Krugman came in first place for claiming on the day of Trump’s victory that the economy would never recover. The Dow Jones has in fact hit record high numbers, crossing the 26,000 point line for the first time ever this week.
ABC News’ Brian Ross came in second for a bungled report on Trump and Russia which sent markets in a downward spiral with the false report. Ross was subsequently demoted for the report.
CNN came in third for falsely reporting that candidate Donald Trump and his son Donald J. Trump Jr. had access to hacked documents from WikiLeaks.
TIME was awarded for falsely reporting that Trump removed a bust of Martin Luther King, Jr. from the Oval Office. That never happened.
Newsweek, which came in 8th for falsely reporting that Polish First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda did not shake President Trump’s hand, acknowledge the “honor” in a tweet.
“Last, but not least: “RUSSIA COLLUSION!” Russian collusion is perhaps the greatest hoax perpetrated on the American people. THERE IS NO COLLUSION!” the award list concludes.
The list, revealed in a statement on the GOP’s site, noted that while “the media spent 90% of the time focused on negative coverage or fake news, the “President has been getting results.”
The GOP points to an economy that has created nearly two million jobs and gained over $8 trillion in wealth since the President’s inauguration, to African Americans and Hispanics who are “enjoying the lowest unemployment rate in recorded history,” Trump’s tax cuts and “relief for hardworking Americans not seen since President Reagan,” and Trump following through on his promise to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel and instructing the State Department to begin to relocate the Embassy, among other achievements.
