Trump: ‘I’m in no rush’ to negotiate with Iran for new nuclear deal

The U.S., France, Germany, and the U.K. have reportedly given Iran until the end of August to accept a new nuclear deal or face the return of harsh international sanctions.

President Donald Trump said that Iran is eager to resume negotiations with the United States for a new nuclear deal, but that he does not feel the matter is time-sensitive because of the widespread damage to Iran’s key nuclear facilities.

Iran “would like to talk. I’m in no rush to talk because we obliterated their sites,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

On Monday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his French, German, and British counterparts reportedly agreed to set a deadline for nuclear talks with Iran, according to Axios.

The leaders were said to have determined that Iran must agree to a nuclear deal by the end of August, or face harsh sanctions that were originally imposed as part of the 2015 nuclear deal and recently lifted.

“France and its partners are… justified in reapplying global embargoes on arms, banks, and nuclear equipment that were lifted 10 years ago. Without a firm, tangible, and verifiable commitment from Iran, we will do so by the end of August at the latest,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told reporters in Brussels on Tuesday.

Earlier in July, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised the Trump administration and claimed that Tehran and Washington had been “on the cusp” of a breakthrough in nuclear talks, before being “derailed” by Israel’s attacks.

“In only five meetings over nine weeks, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and I achieved more than I did in four years of nuclear negotiations with the failed Biden administration. We were on the cusp of a historic breakthrough,” Araghchi wrote in an Op-Ed, published in the Financial Times.

“Iran remains interested in diplomacy but we have good reason to have doubts about further dialogue. If there is a desire to resolve this amicably, the U.S. should show genuine readiness for an equitable accord,” Araghchi added.
