President Donald Trump blasted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after an Israeli retaliatory strike targeting Hezbollah assets in Beirut triggered Iranian threats that could have derailed a peace agreement with the United States.
Speaking to The New York Times on Sunday, Trump described the Israeli premier as a “very difficult guy.”
He added that Netanyahu should be “very thankful” to Washington regarding the deal with Iran, “because if Iran had a nuclear weapon, Israel wouldn’t be around for two hours.”
In an Axios report published overnight Monday, details emerged of a heated phone call between Trump and Netanyahu.
“Why did Bibi have to do a f—ing attack? I was so pissed off. I let him know. He has no f—ing judgment. I let him know that,” Trump recounted to Axios.
Trump was reportedly enraged by Israel’s bombing of Beirut, which Iran had described as a red line it would not tolerate.
“It is so bad — I couldn’t believe it. An hour before we are supposed to sign the deal,” he added.
Trump said the strike had “delayed the signing by a few hours.”
Since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran in late February, the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror group has launched near-daily explosive drone and missile attacks on northern Israel.
Israel’s Defense Ministry pledged that any attack on Israeli territory would be met with strikes on Hezbollah strongholds in Dahiyeh, a suburb of Beirut.
Israel carried out such a strike on Sunday afternoon after Hezbollah drones targeted areas near civilian communities in northern Israel. No injuries were reported.
Despite threatening retaliation over the attack, Iran ultimately refrained from striking Israel.
On Tuesday morning, Iran’s Security Council confirmed that the memorandum of understanding had been finalized, formally ending the war between Iran and the United States.
