President Donald Trump refused to say whether not he would support Israeli airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, declining a direct question by a reporter on the subject.

The president fielded questions from reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on Thursday, following reports that Trump is poised to tap his special Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, to handle talks with Iran regarding the rogue Islamic state’s nuclear program.

Witkoff has led Trump’s efforts to secure and maintain a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas, beginning his efforts in Doha, Qatar even before President Trump’s inauguration this Monday.

Trump refused to answer a question posed by a reporter in the Oval Office Thursday as to whether he would back or oppose an Israeli air campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear program.

“I’m not going to answer that,” Trump responded, while saying that he would be discussing the issue with top aides in the near future.

Trump added that he would prefer the Iranian nuclear crisis be resolved “without…that further step.”

“I’m going to be meeting with various people over the next couple of days. We’ll see. But hopefully, that can be worked out without having to worry about it.”

“It would really be nice if that could be worked out without having to go that further step.”

When pressed to provide details regarding with whom he plans to discuss the issue, Trump said only that he planned to meet with “very high level people.”

“Look, Iran hopefully will make a deal, and if they don’t make a deal, I guess that’s okay, too.”
