President Trump said Iran had halted planned executions of eight women protesters and taken steps to release some of them, describing the development as a response to his public request as negotiations were being discussed.

“Very good news! I have just been informed that the eight women protestors who were going to be executed tonight in Iran will no longer be killed. Four will be released immediately, and four will be sentenced to one month in prison,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He added, “I very much appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and terminated the planned execution. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

President Trump had earlier addressed the issue in a Tuesday post, writing ahead of talks that were later cancelled, “I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so. Please do them no harm! Would be a great start to our negotiations!!! “

Iranian authorities disputed the claims. The Iranian judiciary’s Mizan Online website described the reports as “fake news” and “baseless claims on social media,” stating that the women were never at risk of execution.

Human rights organizations have reported cases involving women detained during recent protest activity.

According to those groups, at least one woman arrested over the January protests has been sentenced to death, while another is facing charges that could result in capital punishment.

The New York Post reported that rights advocates said at least one woman arrested in connection with protest activity had received a death sentence and others were facing charges carrying the possibility of execution.

The statements present differing accounts regarding the status of the detainees and any potential action taken by Iranian authorities.
