Trump says no Iran agreement reached as White House rejects Iranian draft deal

The White House described a published copy of the memorandum “a complete fabrication.”

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States had not yet reached an agreement with Iran and warned that military action could resume as conflicting reports emerged over the status of negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump said, “Iran will not receive sanctions relief even if it hands over the enriched uranium.”

He added: “We haven’t yet reached the point where we are satisfied with the deal — but we will get there. Either we’ll get there, or we’ll simply have to finish the job.”

Trump later said: “We still have not reached an agreement on Iran, and I’m not happy about that.”

He also stated: “Maybe we’ll have to go back to fighting and finish the matter with Iran, and maybe not.”

At the same time, Iran’s Fars news agency reported that Trump could announce within hours, and unilaterally, that the talks had succeeded and that an agreement had been finalized.

However, a member of the Iranian negotiating team told Reuters that unresolved issues remained.

Iranian television reported that a draft memorandum of understanding under discussion includes a US withdrawal from the area surrounding Iran, the lifting of what it described as a naval blockade, and a commitment by Tehran to restore commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz within one month to prewar levels.

The report also said military vessels were not included in the proposed arrangement and that Iran would oversee shipping routes through the strait in cooperation with the Sultanate of Oman.

White House spokeswoman Olivia Wiles initially responded to questions about the Iranian television report by saying negotiations were progressing and that Trump had “made his red lines absolutely clear.”

“As President Trump has said, the negotiations are progressing well,” Wiles said. “President Trump will only make a good deal for the American people — a deal that must ensure Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon.”

Later, a secondary White House account issued a sharper denial, calling the Iranian media report “false” and describing the published memorandum as “a complete fabrication.”
