Turkey’s foreign minister requested cooperation from Iran in pressuring Syria to stop violating the current ceasefire agreement after rebel leaders threatened to withdraw from upcoming peace talks.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called upon Iran to pressure its Syrian government ally to stop all violations of a ceasefire agreement that was brokered by Turkey and Russia and went into effect on December 30th.
Cavusoglu made his request after leaders of rebel factions announced that they would freeze upcoming peace talks in Astana, Kazakhstan if the ceasefire violations continue.
Cavusoglu reiterated the warning that the ceasefire violations undermine the likelihood of peace talks taking place.
Speaking to Turkey’s Anadolu news agency, the foreign minister also said that his country has held discussions with Russia over the possibility of implementing sanctions against any violators of the ceasefire agreement.
