Turkey’s radar systems in Syria pose a threat to Israel’s military operations

Turkish involvement in Syria has grown steadily over the past decade, but intelligence officials say the recent radar initiative marks a more direct attempt to shape the aerial operating environment.

Western intelligence officials revealed that Turkey is moving to deploy advanced radar systems on Syrian territory, a step officials fear could restrict Israeli military operations across the region.

The efforts are part of a wider Turkish effort to deepen its military presence in Syria in recent weeks.

The systems, if activated, would be capable of tracking aerial movement over large portions of Syrian airspace, including flights conducted by the Israel Defense Forces.

According to the assessments, the introduction of Turkish radar coverage could complicate Israel’s ongoing campaign to counter hostile activity in Syria, where Israeli aircraft have carried out repeated strikes in recent years.

Intelligence sources said the radars would likely detect Israeli air operations, reducing tactical flexibility and increasing operational risk.

In addition, Israeli efforts to combat Iran may be compromised by Turkish interference.

Israeli concerns over Turkey’s posture in Syria are not new. Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime last year, Israel struck multiple Syrian military facilities, including air force bases, amid fears that Turkey could move to establish permanent military infrastructure, including drone facilities and bases, in areas vacated by the former regime.

At the time, an Israeli security official described the prospect of a Turkish military base in Syria as a “potential threat,” warning that such a development would undermine Israel’s freedom of action.

Israeli decision-makers have since continued to view Turkey’s expanding footprint as a strategic challenge, particularly given Ankara’s increasingly assertive regional policy.
