UN condemns North Korea’s ballistic missile test

North Korea conducted ballistic missile testing in defiance of the UN Security Council, which had imposed tough sanctions against Pyongyang.

United Nations officials on Monday strongly condemned North Korea’s ballistic missile test the previous day, which had aroused the ire of both President Donald Trump and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“The members of the Security Council deplore all the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea ballistic missile activities, including these launches,” the UN Security Council said in a statement that also called upon UN member states “to redouble their efforts to implement fully the measures imposed on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea by the Security Council.”

On November 30, the UN Security Council had unanimously enacted the “toughest and most comprehensive sanctions regime ever” against North Korea through Resolution 2321 in response to North Korea’s nuclear test on September 9 of last year.

The Security Council said that the test was “in violation and flagrant disregard of Security Council resolutions 1718 (2006), 1874 (2009), 2087 (2013, 2095 (2013) and 2270 (2016).”

The office of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed words of condemnation against North Korea’s recent ballistic missile test. “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the launch of another ballistic missile by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 12 February,” said Guterres’ spokesman Farhan Haq.

“This action is a further troubling violation of Security Council resolutions,” he continued. “The DPRK leadership must return to full compliance with its international obligations and to the path of denuclearization.”
