UN hypocrisy: Pro-women’s rights and pro-Hamas?

If UNRWA is a champion of “gender equality,” how does it explain the fact that its staff filled with members of the misogynistic Hamas?

UN Watch, a Geneva-based NGO that monitors the UN, slammed the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on Twitter Sunday for its apparent hypocrisy on the issue of women’s rights, The Algemeiner reported.

“In 2017, over 80,000 Palestine refugee community members were engaged in awareness-raising on gender equality and Gender Based Violence through various UNRWA-run activities,” the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) tweeted on Sunday.

The tweet included a photo of a woman and two men, all smiling, with a map of “Palestine” on the wall covered with a woman’s image.

UN Watch responded on the social media platform: “If you care about ‘gender equality,’ why is your staff filled with members of the misogynistic Hamas? Also: If you support peace, why does your map in this photo erase Israel?”

Last month, Hamas, the Islamic terror group that rules the Gaza Strip, banned the launching of a new television station specializing in Palestinian women’s affairs in Gaza, claiming that it had never obtained a license, as required, and that another institution in the Strip was carrying the same name, Times of Israel reported at the time.

The channel’s management repudiated those claims, the Times said, affirming that legal status was intact and not in violation of the law. Furthermore, the management said, the TV station was aimed at “serving Palestinian women, developing their capabilities, and supporting their role in the process of the development of Palestinian society.”

Last year, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon called on UNRWA donor countries to investigate the organization’s potential ties to Hamas after it was discovered that two of its employees had recently been elected into Hamas’ political bureau.
