A number of unidentified drone aircraft were recently detected flying over a military facility in Washington, D.C., which houses several Cabinet members, according to a report published early Thursday morning.
The Washington Post cited three people who were briefed on the situation and said that US officials detected the drones flying over the Fort Lesley J. McNair Army base.
Both Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reside at Fort Lesley J. McNair.
According to the report, US officials are now considering relocating Rubio and Hegseth following the drone incident. Thus far, however, no change to their place of residence has been made, a senior administration official said.
Two of the three sources cited in the report said that authorities have not yet determined where the drones originated.
The report did not specify how many drones were detected or the precise date of the incident, which was described as having taken place on a single night within the last 10 days.
Neither the Pentagon nor the State Department have responded to the report.
“The department cannot comment on the secretary’s movements for security reasons, and reporting on such movements is grossly irresponsible,” Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told The Washington Post.
The incident is not the only case of a possible security incident taking place at a major American military facility located in the United States this week.
On Monday and Wednesday, MacDill Air Force Base in Florida’s Tampa Bay area, home to US Central Command, was placed on lockdown.
In the first incident, a suspicious package was found at the base’s visitors center.
No details regarding the incident on Wednesday have been published, except that personnel at the base were ordered to shelter in place for hours.
