US Air Force buildup at Ben Gurion threatening civilian flights

Additional U.S. military aircraft could force widespread flight cancellations at Israel’s busiest international airport.

A renewed buildup of U.S. Air Force aircraft at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport is raising concerns about significant disruptions to civilian air travel, with Israeli officials warning that the arrival of just a handful of additional military aircraft could trigger widespread flight cancellations during the peak summer travel season.

According to a report by Israel’s Channel 12 News, Ben Gurion Airport is approaching its maximum parking capacity as the United States continues to station aerial refueling aircraft at the country’s main international gateway amid escalating regional tensions.

The report said that if just seven more U.S. refueling aircraft arrive—bringing the total number stationed at the airport to 40—the loss of available parking stands for commercial airliners would force airport authorities to begin canceling approximately 30 passenger flights each day beginning August 1.

Such a scenario could affect roughly 5,000 travelers daily, leaving thousands of passengers scrambling to rebook flights during one of the busiest periods of the year.

Airport officials have warned that the disruption could begin even sooner.

In a letter to Israel’s Transportation Ministry, Airports Authority Director General Sharon Kedmi cautioned that, unless an alternative arrangement is implemented immediately, flight cancellations could begin before the end of July.

“This development has immediate and significant operational consequences,” Kedmi wrote.

He added that unless the previously agreed plan to relocate some of the military aircraft is reinstated, Ben Gurion will face a severe shortage of aircraft parking positions beginning July 23.

“As a result, the Airports Authority will have no choice but to cancel approximately 10 passenger flights per day. If additional military aircraft arrive, the disruption will become substantially more severe.”

According to Channel 12, officials estimate that as many as 50,000 airline tickets could ultimately be canceled if the congestion is not resolved.

The issue reportedly prompted an emergency meeting on Monday attended by Transportation Minister Miri Regev, senior Transportation Ministry officials, executives from the Israel Airports Authority, and representatives from the aviation industry to discuss possible solutions before the situation deteriorates further.
