US and Israel speed up production for Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Iron Beam

The acceleration is funded partly through the U.S. aid package approved in April 2024, which designated $5.2 billion for air-defense development.

Israel advanced a major expansion of its air-defense infrastructure on Thursday, moving to speed up production of interceptors and new systems after two years of intense rocket and drone fire strained existing stockpiles.

The Defense Ministry said the latest procurement effort will help ensure that Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and the developing Iron Beam laser system remain ready for the next wave of regional threats.

The announcement followed growing concerns in the security establishment that the heavy use of interceptors during the 2023–2025 war could leave Israel exposed if new fronts open before replenishment is complete. The new contract, signed by Defense Ministry Director-General Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amir Baram, is meant to confront that gap directly.

Baram signed the agreement at ministry headquarters alongside Defense Minister Israel Katz and senior Israeli and American officials, including representatives from Israel’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development and the U.S. defense attaché. Rafael executives also attended, reflecting the company’s central role in producing the interceptors and integrating new capabilities.

Baram said the evolving security landscape makes accelerated production essential. “We remain committed to strengthening the readiness and operational capacity of the IDF in an increasingly complex security environment,” he said. He added that “The Iron Dome system has fundamentally transformed the battlefield, demonstrating unprecedented interception capabilities on a global scale against a vast spectrum of threats. This contract will dramatically enhance the multi-layered defense posture and strategic stability of the State of Israel.”

Rafael CEO Yoav Tourgeman said current systems will soon operate alongside new laser-based defenses. He noted that Iron Dome and David’s Sling “will be joined by the first operational laser-based defense system emerging from Rafael’s production lines,” calling the expanded procurement a sign of renewed confidence in Israeli air-defense technology.

The acceleration is funded partly through the U.S. aid package approved in April 2024, which designated $5.2 billion for air-defense development. Officials said the money supports interceptor production for Iron Dome and David’s Sling, as well as the final development stage of Israel’s high-powered laser system.

According to the ministry, Iron Dome remains the centerpiece of the country’s defensive array. It is produced jointly with the U.S., and its performance during the war — including intercepts of rockets, missiles, UAVs, and cruise-missile threats — reinforced its strategic value. Rafael works with ELTA Systems and mPrest on the program, while the U.S. Missile Defense Agency continues manufacturing key components for Israel’s multi-layered defense network.

Defense officials said deployment of additional Iron Beam elements will continue through 2026.
