US Envoy: Israel may be forced to escalate if Hamas refuses to release hostages

Despite Israel’s willingness to compromise, Hamas continues to obstruct progress.

If Hamas continues to refuse to release the hostages it still holds, Israel will likely have no choice but to take direct military action, according to U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler.

Speaking Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union, Boehler emphasized the urgency and seriousness of the situation.

“If Hamas does not act toward a ceasefire and return the hostages, Israel is going to have to take some kinetic action,” he warned.

The phrase “kinetic action” refers to military operations involving the use of lethal force, a step Israel has been trying to avoid while still working for a peaceful resolution.

Boehler shared that U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has been deeply involved in negotiations, saying Witkoff “has been leaning in really closely on a deal, and he’s done it on Israel… the Israelis want something done.”

Despite Israel’s willingness to compromise, Hamas continues to obstruct progress.

“Hamas is very hard-headed,” Boehler admitted. “They have been offered many things that they should take, and it is time for Hamas to release the hostages.”

Israel, he stressed, is “bending over backward” in efforts to secure a deal.

The country’s determination has only grown stronger after a successful airstrike campaign targeting Iranian infrastructure – a clear signal that Israel will defend itself when necessary.

Two of the murdered hostages, Itay Chen and Omer Neutra, were U.S. citizens, emphasizing the international stakes.

“We need to get those Americans out; we need to get the other hostages out,” Boehler said.

He also revealed that the U.S. has made clear to Hamas that there is a “firm pathway to negotiate peace, and that’s the best they are going to get.”

Hamas has been warned that the deal on the table is the best possible outcome and that delays will only worsen their position. “Every time that they have not [taken the deal], the offer goes down,” he added.

As Hamas continues its intransigence, Israel remains resolute. Without meaningful movement, further military action may be inevitable.
