Iran and its affiliated groups are likely to pursue retaliatory actions against the United States following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, though a broad physical assault on US soil is considered unlikely, according to a US intelligence assessment reviewed by Reuters.
The February 28 report, prepared by the Office of Intelligence and Analysis at the Department of Homeland Security, said Iran and its proxies “probably” present a risk of targeted attacks داخل the United States. It stated, “Although a large-scale physical attack is unlikely, Iran and its proxies probably pose a persistent threat of targeted attacks in the Homeland, and will almost certainly escalate retaliatory actions — or calls to action.”
The assessment said the more immediate concern involves cyber activity by Iran-aligned “hacktivists,” including website defacements and distributed denial-of-service attacks against US networks.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement, “I am in direct coordination with our federal intelligence and law enforcement partners as we continue to closely monitor and thwart any potential threats to the homeland.”
Iran confirmed Sunday that Khamenei was killed in a strike Saturday announced earlier by Israel and US President Donald Trump.

Hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran widened this week. Iran-backed Hezbollah launched missiles at Israel on Monday, prompting Israeli strikes in Lebanon, while Tehran maintained missile and drone attacks against Gulf states hosting US military bases.
Separately, investigators examining a bar shooting in Austin, Texas, that left at least two people dead said it was too soon to determine whether the suspect was influenced by the conflict. The gunman, who was shot and killed by police, was photographed wearing a shirt bearing an Iranian flag and the word “IRAN” in green, white and red. A US law enforcement official told Reuters he also wore a sweatshirt reading “Property of Allah.”
