Senior US officials assured an Israeli delegation to Washington that the Biden Administration would be fully prepared to back Israel if an all-out war develops with Lebanon, according to a CNN report.
The report follows a visit to Washington this week by Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi.
They met with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and White House Middle East affairs coordinator Brett McGurk.
The Israeli and US officials discussed the escalation on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon as well as the hostage deal that Hamas has yet to accept and the role of Iran in the wider conflict.
They also discussed how to de-escalate the tension along the border and ways tens of thousands of Israelis who have been evacuated since the beginning can return to their homes.
US officials said that if Israel and Lebanon are engaged in a full-scale war, the US will provide Israel with the security it needs.
However, they emphasized that the Biden Administration will not deploy US troops on the ground.
Since October 7th, Hezbollah has fired hundreds of missiles and drones into northern Israel.
The recent escalation of attacks and the terror group’s threatening rhetoric have led IDF generals to devise operational plans for a full-scale war.
US President Joe Biden stated that he doesn’t want to see an additional war break out on Israel’s northern border and sent US envoy Amos Hochstein last week to try to de-escalate the conflict.
Last week, US officials expressed concern that Iran-backed Hezbollah’s missile attacks could overwhelm Israel’s Iron Dome system responsible for protecting Israel.
