The US State Department has alerted the guarantor countries of the Gaza ceasefire that there are “credible reports indicating an imminent violation of the ceasefire by Hamas against the residents of Gaza.”
Any planned attack on Palestinian civilians, the statement said, would be a direct breach of the agreement and could severely undermine the progress achieved in stabilizing the region.
The statement emphasized that the sponsoring countries are demanding that Hamas fully meet its obligations under the agreement. “If Hamas carries out the attack, it will take steps to protect the residents of Gaza and to maintain the ceasefire,” it added.
While the ceasefire has held so far, its stability remains fragile, and any violations could quickly unravel the delicate calm recently established.
