US strikes Iran after American drone downed, Iran claims it bombed US airbase

US bombs Iranian drone sites, while Iran claims to strike American airbase in latest escalation during nuclear talks.

The US military carried out strikes on Iranian radar and drone command sites over the weekend after Tehran shot down an American drone over international waters, US Central Command said, as Iran claimed it had retaliated by targeting an air base used in the American operation.

CENTCOM said the strikes were launched Saturday and Sunday against “radar and command and control sites for drones in Goruk, Iran and Qeshm Island.”

The command said the attacks were carried out in response to “aggressive Iranian actions that included the shootdown of a US MQ-1 drone that was operating over international waters.”

“US fighter aircraft swiftly responded by eliminating Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed clear threats to ships transiting regional waters,” CENTCOM said.

No US military personnel were harmed, the command said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later said its Aerospace Force had targeted an air base used in what it called a US attack on a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island, in southern Hormozgan province near the Strait of Hormuz.

The IRGC did not identify the location of the base. The claim came shortly after Kuwait reported incoming missile and drone fire and said its air defenses had opened fire to intercept the attack.

According to Iranian reports, the IRGC claimed that all predetermined targets were hit and warned that further US attacks would draw a response “different in scale and nature.” There was no immediate US confirmation of the Iranian claim.

The latest exchange marks another test of the nominal ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which has been repeatedly strained by back-and-forth attacks as negotiations continue over a possible broader arrangement.

The US and Iran traded strikes last week as well, including an Iranian attack on a US air base after Washington said it targeted an Iranian drone operation near the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation comes amid continuing tensions around the strategic waterway, where Iran has disrupted shipping and energy flows, and as Washington and Tehran remain engaged in efforts to reach a deal after months of conflict.

President Donald Trump said Monday that he remained optimistic about diplomacy.

“Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good one for the U.S.A. and those that are with us,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Just sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end — It always does!”
