Police believe Wasil Farooqui chose his victims randomly before he attacked them with a knife while repeatedly shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
A man stabbed and seriously wounded a man and woman in Virginia while repeatedly shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
The terrorist, Wasil Farooqui, 20, attacked the pair with a knife as they entered an apartment building Saturday evening in Roanoke County.
According to witnesses, Farooqui was yelling “Allahu Akbar,” — Arabic for “God is great” — during the attack, a phrase often used by Muslim terrorists during attacks.
The male victim fought off Farooqui, who fled the scene. Farooqui was later arrested when he arrived at a hospital to seek care for his wounds.
Farooqui sad during his questioning that he had left his house to “clear his head” and took with him a butcher knife from the kitchen. He said he heard voices “telling him that he was stupid” and that he should attack someone. He then saw the man and woman leaving the building and stabbed them multiple times.
Farooqui said he does not know the people he attacked or why he attacked them. Police believe Farooqui chose his victims randomly.
The FBI is investigating the attack alongside police.
“While I cannot discuss the details of the investigation at this time, I do want to reassure the community that we are working to determine the nature of the incident,” Adam Lee, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Richmond Division, said in a statement on Tuesday.
Farooqui is charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and was being held without bond at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.
