Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was widely ridiculed on social media during his recent eight-day trip with his family to India, where they wore colorful Indian costumes that even people in India said were just too much.

The wardrobe choice was only one of the gaffes throughout the week. More serious was an invitation to Jaspal Atwal – a Canada-based former member of a banned Sikh separatist group who had been convicted of trying to kill an Indian Cabinet minister in 1986 – to a party for Trudeau at Canada’s High Commission in New Delhi. Canada quickly withdrew the invitation once it was discovered.

Initially snubbed, Trudeau, who was greeted upon arrival by the minister of agriculture, finally met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the end of the visit. Canada and India signed agreements for cooperation in security, trade and higher education.
