Wide majority of Americans back Trump’s Gaza peace deal

President Donald Trump’s peace deal ending the war in Gaza and returning the hostages gets strong marks from Republicans and even earns the support of nearly half of Democrats.

A majority of Americans back President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan for the Gaza Strip, which is aimed at permanently ending the war in the Gaza Strip, according to a new poll.

On Tuesday, a poll conducted by YouGov and The Economist was published, based on a survey of 1,622 American adults from October 10 to 13, with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

The poll found just 7% of Americans oppose the president’s Gaza peace deal, compared with 53% who support it, and 40% are unsure.

While there was a significant partisan divide, with Republicans more likely than Democrats to support Trump’s peace deal, nearly half of Democrats and independents said they backed the Gaza plan.

A total of 70% of Republicans said they endorsed the agreement, compared with 44% of Democrats and 47% of independents.

The poll also found that older respondents were more likely to back the deal than younger Americans, with 69% of respondents 65 and older endorsing the peace plan compared with 56% of those ages 45 to 64, 46% of those 30 to 44, and just 41% of adults under 30.

However, a similar poll conducted last week by YouGov found that while a similar percentage of Americans backed the Gaza peace deal (54%), just over one-third (34%) credited President Trump with playing a major role in the negotiations.

Some prominent Democrats, including several former presidents, lauded Trump for his administration’s efforts to secure a deal.

“I commend President Trump and his team for their work to get a renewed ceasefire deal over the finish line,” said former President Joe Biden, Trump’s predecessor, successor, and 2020 election opponent. “The road to this deal was not easy.”

Former President Bill Clinton issued a statement praising Trump and Qatar for helping to broker the agreement.

“President Trump and his administration, Qatar, and other regional actors deserve great credit for keeping everyone engaged until the agreement was reached.”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s 2024 election opponent, also credited Trump with brokering the peace deal, even as she avoided using his name in her statement.

“Through diplomacy and persistence, today is an important first step toward a more hopeful future. I commend the leaders and partners whose efforts made this agreement possible, including the president and his team.”
