Many political leaders around the world emphasized their determination to stand at Britain’s side after a terror attack in London on Saturday night killed 7 and injured scores of people.
Political leaders around the world expressed messages of solidarity with the United Kingdom after a terror attack on London Bridge late Saturday night left 7 dead and scores wounded.
“In the fight against every form of terrorism, we stand firmly and with determination at Britain’s side,” said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“Today, we are united beyond all borders in horror and sorrow, but also in determination.”
Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron conveyed similar remarks.
“In the face of this new tragedy, France is more than ever at Britain’s side,” Macron said.
US President Donald Trump also posted a message of solidarity with the UK, arguably America’s closest ally, on social media.
“Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the UK, we will be there,” Trump wrote. “WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!”
Trump also criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan for calling on residents and visitors in London not to be “alarmed” with the increased police presence in the city following the attack.
“We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people,” Trump tweeted. “At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!’”
During a television interview, Khan noted that in London, there would be “an increased police presence today, including armed officers and uniformed officers” and that “there is no reason to be alarmed by this.”
Responding to Trump’s remarks on Twitter, the mayor’s spokesperson said that “(Khan) has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks urging Londoners not to be alarmed when they saw more police — including armed officers — on the streets.”
Khan received a message of solidarity on Sunday from Jerusalem’s Mayor Nir Barkat.
“On behalf of all of the residents of Jerusalem, I am writing to express our deepest condolences to the residents of London, “ Barkat wrote. “We stand by your side during this difficult time.”
“Jerusalem stands with London – today and always,” he added.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also joined in expressing condolences to the United Kingdom for Saturday night’s terror attack, while addressing the ECOWAS (Economic Community for West African States) Africa-Israel summit in Monrovia, Liberia.
“A somber cloud hangs over this glorious day,” Netanyahu said. “This is the cloud of terrorism that has claimed the lives of so many innocent Africans, most recently in Niger and Mali, and in recent hours, another terrible attack was launched on innocent people in the heart of London.”
“We send our condolences to the British people and we pledge our commitment to fight this scourge, this scourge that knows no bounds,” Netanyahu continued.
