Abbas threatens to ‘drop bombshell’ during UN speech

Besides demonizing the Jewish state, Palestinian Authority Chair Mahmoud Abbas threatened to “drop a bombshell” during his UN address at the end of the month. What does he mean? Will he announce the unilateral establishment of a Palestinian state?

Palestinian Authority (PA) head Mahmoud Abbas warned about a shocking announcement that he plans on making during his address to the UN General Assembly on September 29. He refused to elaborate on the nature of this purportedly dramatic move.

Speaking to Arab media on Thursday, he added that his speech, in which he will “drop a bombshell,” will also touch on the alleged violations of the Oslo peace accords by the Israelis, including the supposed demolition of illegally built homes in areas under partial or full control of the PA.

The Palestinian leader also charged that the Jewish state provides Muslim terror groups such as the Islamic State (ISIS) with legitimacy for their religious wars in the Middle East.

“If Israel wants to be a Jewish state, it provides legitimacy to ISIS and others who seek to establish an Islamic state in Syria, Egypt, and Gaza,” he stated.

He blamed Israel for the recent unrest on the Temple Mount and vowed that the Palestinians will not allow Jewish prayer at the holy site.

Ynet reports that Israeli officials are concerned about Abbas’ pending political and diplomatic moves, estimating that he himself has not come to a final decision on what they may be.

Abbas recently threatened to declare all the accords signed with Israel null and void.

Such a move would be the essential disbanding of the PA, which would leave Israel with full responsibility for all Palestinian issues.

Minister of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Resources Yuval Steinitz called for acute measures against the PA if it declares the annulment of the Oslo peace accords.

According to Ynet, Israeli officials warned that if Abbas “breaks the rules,” Israel will review the possibility of exiling him or blockading him within the confines of the PA – similar to what was done with Yasser Arafat in his last days.
