American Jews back Israeli airstrikes on Iran – poll

More than two-thirds of American Jews, including a majority of Harris voters, say Israel did the right thing by attacking Iran, though only one-third of US Jews back American airstrikes on Iran.

A majority of American Jews say they support Israel’s war against the Iranian regime, while opposing direct American participation in the conflict, a new poll shows.

The survey was conducted by the Jewish People Policy Institute, as part of its monthly “Voice of the Jewish People” index.

The June index, conducted after Israel began Operation Rising Lion on June 13, but before American B-2 bombers hit three Iranian nuclear facilities this weekend, found that over two-thirds (69%) of US Jews believe Israel “did the right thing by going to war with Iran.”

Just 13% opposed the decision, while 18% were unsure.

Virtually all (93%) of American Jews who said they voted for President Donald Trump agreed with Israel’s decision to strike Iran, while a slimmer majority (53%) of unsuccessful presidential candidate Kamala Harris voters also supported Israel’s decision.

However, most respondents said they do not believe the US should join Israel in attacking Iran.

A small majority (51%) said the US should limit its involvement to arming and equipping Israel, without attacking Iran or defending Israel from incoming missiles.

Nearly as many (49%) said the US should also help defend Israel, without striking Iran.

Just 32% said the US should bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities, while 12% believe the US should have no direct or indirect involvement whatsoever in the conflict.

Confidence among American Jews in Trump to properly handle Iran policy rose in June, after the beginning of Israel’s air campaign, with the number saying they have “a great deal of confidence” in the president nearly doubling, from 10% in May to 19%, while 44% said they had no confidence at all in Trump, down from 55% in May.

More than three-quarters of American Jews agree to some extent with the claim that “being Jewish in public is becoming increasingly dangerous” in the US.

Over one-third (34%) said that statement reflects their own feelings strongly, with 44% saying it reflects their feelings to some extent, while 19% said the statement is exaggerated. Only 3% said being Jewish in public is not dangerous at all.
