What was meant to be a solemn religious rite for Iran’s slain supreme leader has instead become the subject of a heated regional controversy, after Iranian media and social media users discovered that the Quranic verses recited as foreign delegations approached Ali Khamenei’s coffin appeared to have been carefully chosen to deliver pointed political messages, rather than selected at random.

The scrutiny began after Iranian outlets, including the conservative site Tabnak and the news site Fararu, began analyzing footage of the funeral proceedings and noted that the passages recited seemed tailored to each visiting delegation’s recent political and military conduct, particularly toward Iran’s direct confrontation with Israel and the United States earlier this year.

Tabnak described the practice as an innovation in public diplomacy.

The moment that drew the most attention came as Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed bin Abdulkarim approached Khamenei’s coffin.

The reciter read Verse 13 of Surah Al Imran, which recounts the Battle of Badr, in which a small, outnumbered force of the Prophet Muhammad’s followers defeated a much larger army.

The verse concludes: “God supports whom He wills with His help. Surely in this is a lesson for those with insight.”

Iranian commentators quickly connected the choice to reports that Saudi Arabia had allowed the United States to operate from its territory during the recent conflict, even as Riyadh pushed to prevent a wider regional war.

Some observers noted that the Battle of Badr itself was fought on what is now Saudi soil, sharpening the apparent message.

Turkey’s delegation received a verse from Surah An-Nisa contrasting believers who take up the struggle with those who remain behind without justification, widely interpreted as a rebuke of Ankara’s cautious posture during recent Middle East crises and its reluctance to align actively with Iran’s camp.

The distinctions extended to Lebanon as well.

The official Lebanese state delegation was met with a verse suggesting they would have done better to sacrifice themselves for the cause and walk the righteous path, while a separate delegation from Hezbollah, arriving independently, was received with verses promising decisive victory to what the text called the people of God.

The most politically explosive moment, according to widespread accounts inside Iran, involved the family of Islamic Republic founder Ruhollah Khomeini.

As his grandson, Hassan Khomeini, a figure closely associated with Iran’s reformist and more moderate camp, approached the coffin, the reciter began Verse 95 of Surah An-Nisa, which emphasizes the vast gap between believers who stay home and those who sacrifice their wealth and their lives for the cause.

Videos circulating online showed Khomeini leaving the area shortly after the recitation began, a moment that drew open satisfaction from hardline conservative circles but also widespread public criticism over what many saw as a calculated insult to a guest.

The disclosures have divided opinion across the Muslim world. Supporters of Iran’s government defended the choices as a legitimate and pointed reminder to neighboring states of the consequences of their policy choices.

Others, including many Iranian citizens and religious figures, expressed disgust, arguing that using sacred scripture to needle and criticize mourners who came to pay their respects runs counter to Persian tradition and to Islamic and prophetic values that hold hospitality as sacred.

Reaction in the wider Arab world, and particularly in Iraq, was harsher still, with local commentators describing the treatment of the Saudi delegation as a display of diplomatic foolishness and entrenched hatred on the part of Tehran’s current leadership.

Iranian officials have not issued any formal explanation for the selections or confirmed that they were deliberately curated for each delegation.
