Australian police detain seven men en route to Bondi Beach

Australian counterterrorism police detained several men Thursday after receiving intelligence indicating they were traveling toward Sydney’s Bondi Beach, the site of a recent deadly terror attack, authorities said.

According to police, the suspects were intercepted after intelligence suggested a violent act may have been in the planning stages.

Tactical Operations officers intercepted two vehicles during the operation, with seven men now being questioned as part of the investigation.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that weapons were found inside the vehicles at the time of the arrests, though police have not officially verified that information.

In a statement, police said: “Tactical Operations police responded to information received that a violent act was possibly being planned. Police subsequently intercepted two cars as part of the investigation.”

Authorities emphasized that, at this stage, no direct link has been established between the detained individuals and the ongoing investigation into the Bondi Beach terror attack.

“At this point in time, police have not identified any connection to the current police investigation of the Bondi terror attack,” the statement added.

The arrests come amid heightened concern after Sunday’s massacre at a Jewish Chanukah candle-lighting event at Bondi Beach, where multiple terrorists opened fire on civilians, killing 15 people and wounding dozens more.
