CENTCOM commander visits Israel amid rising Iran threat

The visit came as the United States continues to reinforce its military posture across the Middle East.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Adm. Brad Cooper visited Israel on Saturday for meetings with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, as Israel and the United States deepen coordination amid escalating tensions with Iran.

According to the IDF, Cooper was hosted as Zamir’s official guest and held a lengthy one-on-one meeting with the chief of staff. The two later convened a broader discussion with senior commanders. The military said the visit reflected the close ties between the two forces and continued efforts to strengthen defensive cooperation.

The visit came as the United States continues to reinforce its military posture across the Middle East, with additional naval and air assets moving into the region in recent days.

Reports have pointed to a growing concentration of U.S. warships, including platforms capable of launching Tomahawk missiles, alongside the carrier strike group built around the USS Abraham Lincoln. Increased fighter activity and additional air defense deployments have also been reported.

President Donald Trump has highlighted the buildup in increasingly blunt terms, describing it as a major show of force directed at Tehran.

“We have a lot of ships going that direction just in case. We have a big flotilla going in that direction. And we’ll see what happens,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One after returning from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“We have an armada. We have a massive fleet heading in that direction, and maybe we won’t have to use it. We’ll see,” he added.

At the same time, reports of heightened concern inside Iran have surfaced. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has reportedly relocated to a fortified underground bunker in Tehran as officials assess what they describe as a growing threat of a possible U.S. strike, according to the opposition-affiliated outlet Iran International.

The uncertainty has also begun to disrupt regional air travel. Several major airlines have reportedly canceled or rerouted flights this weekend, affecting routes to Israel and key Gulf hubs as carriers reassess risk amid the rising tensions.

For Israel, Cooper’s visit and the broader U.S. posture shift add to a growing sense that the region is entering a more volatile phase, with Washington and Jerusalem tightening coordination as the stakes rise.
