Chaos in Montreal’s Jewish community – Gunman neutralized after killing police officer and civilian

While authorities have not yet declared a specific motive, the incident has deeply rattled local Jewish residents.

The immediate threat has been neutralized, but the streets of Montreal remain in a state of high lockdown and intense anxiety.

The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) has officially confirmed that a gunman who opened fire in a massive shooting incident on Decarie Boulevard has been neutralized.

However, authorities are stressing a critical point: the police operation is still highly active, and the entire area remains a strictly cordoned-off crime scene.

The drama escalated rapidly during the midday hours when a loud, government-issued emergency alert blared simultaneously across thousands of civilian mobile phones in the area.

The alert warned residents of an armed and dangerous man, instructing everyone to immediately lock their doors, shelter in place, and stay far away from windows.

The fast-moving shootout, which spanned along Decarie Boulevard, ultimately culminated near the intersection of Trans Island Avenue and De Courtrai Avenue.

The close-range exchange of gunfire between responding officers and the suspect left a highly complex and bloody scene.

One police officer was killed during the confrontation and another was wounded as they rushed to stop the gunman.

Innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire, resulting in at least one civilian death.

The severity of the wounded has not yet been released. Tactical units successfully engaged and neutralized the shooter, halting the barrage of gunfire.

Panic gripped the neighborhood as dozens of rounds echoed near local businesses and hotels.

Eyewitness accounts are beginning to emerge from inside the Hilton Garden Inn, located right on the Decarie axis, where guests and hotel staff described the sheer terror as the situation unfolded.

Hotel occupants noted that they were told there was an active shooter right outside and that there was a fear he might try to breach the building.

The staff acted incredibly fast and rushed them into the massive industrial kitchen coolers and freezers to keep them safe, packing them in there while they shook from the cold and from pure fear.

Simultaneously, hundreds of drivers found themselves trapped in gridlock on the Decarie Expressway after police completely shut down all major exits and entrances to isolate the area and prevent the suspect from fleeing or targeting vehicles.

Even though the gunman is no longer an active threat, the SPVM emphasizes that heavy tactical units are still meticulously sweeping the area to rule out any potential accomplices or secondary hazards, as well as to preserve crucial forensic evidence.

Major road closures are expected to last for hours, and the public is urged to continue avoiding the perimeter.

The location of the shooting has sparked immense concern.

The Côte-des-Neiges and neighboring NDG, Hampstead areas are home to a vibrant, densely populated sector of Montreal’s Jewish community, with several synagogues, schools, and community centers, including Chabad NDG, located just blocks away from the gunfire.

While authorities have not yet declared a specific motive, the incident has deeply rattled local Jewish residents.

The city’s Jewish infrastructure has been on permanent high alert over the past year and a half following a string of targeted antisemitic attacks, including late-night shootings at Jewish day schools and firebombings of community institutions.

The SPVM’s Major Crimes Unit is spearheading the investigation and is scheduled to hold a comprehensive press briefing.

Investigators state that all angles are currently on the table, ranging from a criminal dispute or mental health crisis to a potential hate crime or act of terror.
