Police in Miami Beach on Wednesday arrested a man suspected in the antisemitic assault on a Jewish schoolteacher a day earlier.
Miami Beach Police announced that the suspect was arrested on charges of strong-arm robbery and battery with prejudice and identified the man in custody as 33-year-old Slemons Graves.
On Tuesday, Graves robbed and assaulted a teacher from the Lehrman Community Day School, a Jewish day school in Miami Beach.
Graves approached the woman after she parked her car down the street from the school.
After noticing she was wearing a Star of David necklace, he spat in her face and called her a “dirty Jew.”
During the attack, Graves slapped the woman on the left side of her head, then stole her cellphone. He threw it on the ground repeatedly, destroying it.
Following the confrontation, Graves fled the scene on foot. After the victim reached the school and filed a police complaint by phone, authorities identified and located Graves, taking him into custody a day after the assault.
Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner condemned the attack, calling it “horrific.”
“It’s disgusting, any type of hate crime – certainly in this case, when someone is targeted because they’re wearing a Jewish star and then called names because they’re Jewish and then attacked and hit, shattered their cellphone, it’s horrific.”
Residents expressed surprise at the incident, with Rabbi Shneur Korf, who lives near the scene of the attack, describing it as “shocking.”
“It’s unfortunately something which the Jewish people have lived with for centuries, and to happen in Miami Beach a block away from my house is shocking,” Rabbi Korf told 7News Miami.
