“Mr. Prime Minister, change policies and restore deterrence,” Education Minister and Jewish Home Party head Naftali Bennett said at a party meeting, Monday.
Bennett made his remarks in connection with the Sunday evening attack near the town of Ofra in Samaria, where one or more terrorists in a passing car shot at seven Israelis standing on the side of the road.
“Remove the shackles of ‘fake law’ so that we can act. We call on the prime minister to normalize the status of Ofra immediately. All we need to do is summon the attorney general and approve it,” Bennett said, referring to the fact that the town, though founded in 1975, still sits in legal limbo as to its official status as far as the State of Israel is concerned.
One of those injured was a 21-year-old pregnant woman. An emergency c-section was conducted to try and save the baby who remains in critical condition. The mother is expected to recover.
Netanyahu responded to Bennett’s remarks at a Likud meeting, according to Israel Hayom.
“There is a prime minister here who stood for 12 years against two very, very difficult American presidents. We are managing [the security situation] now so we can secure a green light for the settlements because a campaign is being waged against us over settlements we’ve already built,” Netanyahu said, the paper reports.
“What you think is simple – is far more complicated. But we’re navigating it with intelligence to find the way,” Netanyahu said of normalizing the status of the settlements.
