French dock workers block 14-ton arms shipment to Israel

Dock workers at the port of Fos-sur-Mer in Southern France have blocked a shipment of military equipment headed for Israel, refusing to load ammunition components to help the Jewish State defeat Hamas.

Nineteen pallets of metal ammunition links manufactured by Marseille-based Eurolinks were scheduled for Thursday loading to Haifa.

Weighing 14 tons although small, these metal pieces are crucial as they are used to connect machine gun bullets, allowing for rapid bursts of fire.

“We managed to identify it and set it aside,” CGT trade union leader Christophe Claret told AFP. “Once dockers refuse to load a shipment, no one else can do it for them.”

GT secretary general Sophie Binet called the disruption part of the union’s “long internationalist tradition for peace” and demanded French President Emmanuel Macron “immediately block all arms deliveries to the State of Israel.”

Meanwhile, President Macron has shifted dramatically from early support for Israel after Hamas’s October 7 massacre to increasingly sharp criticism.

Last week in Singapore, Macron warned France could “apply sanctions” against Israelis unless the government responds to Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

He called the situation “untenable” and said “if there is no response that meets the humanitarian situation in the coming hours and days, obviously, we will have to toughen our collective position.”

Macron has gone further than most Western leaders. In April, he said France should recognize a Palestinian state in “the coming months,” potentially at a UN conference he’s co-hosting with Saudi Arabia later this month.

Israel has hit back hard, with its Foreign Ministry accusing Macron of waging a “crusade against the Jewish state.”

After Macron called Netanyahu’s actions “unacceptable” and “shameful” on television, Netanyahu accused the French president of choosing to “stand with Hamas.”
