From captivity to commitment: Former Gaza hostages announce engagement in Florida

Before their abduction, the couple met through work and lived together for about a year and a half in Kibbutz Nir Oz, from where they were taken during the Hamas assault.

Former Gaza hostages Matan Zangauker and Ilana Gritzwesky have announced their engagement, marking an emotional turning point after more than a year shaped by captivity, separation, and public struggle.

The news was shared Sunday in a post on X by Zangauker’s mother, Einav Zangauker, who published a photo of the couple standing near a large illuminated sign reading, “Will you marry me?” set against the backdrop of the Hard Rock Hotel complex in Florida.

“This is my victory picture,” Einav wrote, referring to her son and his fiancée.

The engagement comes only months after Zangauker was freed from Gaza, where he endured 738 days in Hamas captivity, making him one of the last hostages to be released.

Gritzwesky was also abducted during the October 7, 2023 attacks and was freed earlier, on November 30, 2023.

Before their abduction, the couple met through work and lived together for about a year and a half in Kibbutz Nir Oz, from where they were taken during the Hamas assault.

While Zangauker was still being held, Gritzwesky became a powerful symbol of the struggle for the hostages’ return.

In August, she staged a symbolic wedding during a protest at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, standing beneath a chuppah in a wedding dress while holding his photograph.

“Matan. If you weren’t taken, we could have been married,” she said during the demonstration. “I don’t stop thinking about what was taken from us in just one day. Our world was changed, and you were taken from me.”

“You’re not here to hug me, and I’m not there to keep you strong. I’m fighting for you until you return, you and all of the hostages. We will bring you back alive, heal together, and God willing, build our home together in Israel.”

Throughout the ordeal, Einav Zangauker became one of the most recognizable faces of the campaign to bring the hostages home, appearing frequently at protests and speaking out forcefully against the government over its handling of the crisis.

For many following the hostage story, the engagement represents more than a personal milestone. It is being viewed as a moment of resilience and defiance, a declaration that life, love, and the future can still be reclaimed after unimaginable loss.
