A vessel carrying anti-Israel activists seeking to run the Israeli military’s security blockade of the Gaza Strip departed from Sicily late on Sunday night.
The ship’s manifest includes several high-profile figures, including 22-year-old Swedish global warming activist Greta Thunberg, French European Union MP Rima Hassan, and “Game of Thrones” actor Liam Cunningham of Ireland.
“What concerns me is that the people who do care and are not doing anything are, in my opinion, worse than the people who don’t care,” Cunningham said.
“It’s live-streamed, this genocide – and the option to say you didn’t know is not an option. You did know and you did nothing, you stayed quiet.”
The voyage was organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FCC), and involves a single vessel, the Madleen, which left Catania, Sicily bound for Gaza just before midnight between Saturday and Sunday.
Activists say the vessel will bring humanitarian supplies to Gazans by sea, in violation of the Israeli security blockage, to protest the ongoing war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
“The world cannot be silent bystanders,” Thunberg said on Saturday ahead of the Madleen’s departure.
“This silence and passivity that we are seeing from most of the world is deadly. We are seeing a systematic starvation of two million people. Every single one of us has a moral obligation to do everything we can to fight for a free Palestine.”
Hassan, who was barred from entering Israel in February over her support for the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, castigated what she called the “inadequate” response of France and the EU to the “Palestinian question.”
A similar attempt to run the IDF blockade of Gaza failed earlier this month, when an FCC voyage of the Conscience was scrubbed, after the vessel was crippled, apparently after being struck by drone aircraft in international waters off the coast of Malta.
