A short exchange at a public forum in Doha has ignited a wave of commentary in Israel after a video clip appeared to capture senior Hamas figure Khaled Mashaal saying, in translation, “To a free Israel, with God’s help,” before immediately correcting himself and adding, “Thank you very much, and a free Palestine.”

The moment occurred during Mashaal’s appearance Sunday at the Al Jazeera Forum in Qatar, where he spoke about Gaza and Hamas’s position on disarmament.

The brief line, rendered in Hebrew subtitles on versions circulating online, was quickly separated from the broader speech and reposted across Israeli social media platforms.

Viewers in Israel treated the clip as either a verbal slip or a momentary mix-up during a live address. The footage shows Mashaal concluding a point before delivering the line that drew attention, then smoothly returning to the familiar slogan he is known for repeating in public appearances.

No official transcript from the event has surfaced highlighting the phrase in question, but the short segment has continued to spread because of the apparent confusion it captures in the middle of a carefully framed message.

During the same appearance, Mashaal rejected calls for Hamas to relinquish its weapons.

He argued that giving up arms would leave Palestinians as “an easy victim to be eliminated,” framing the issue as one of survival rather than political choice.

The broader discussion at the forum focused on Gaza and the future of Hamas’s armed posture. However, online attention in Israel shifted almost entirely to the fleeting line that appeared inconsistent with the rest of his remarks.
