Has the Republican backlash over President Donald Trump’s Iran deal reached the White House? US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has drawn a series of hard red lines that appear to diverge from Trump’s more conciliatory approach toward Tehran.
Rubio declared the US will never allow Iran to charge tolls in the Strait of Hormuz and insisted any final agreement must ultimately confront Tehran’s regional terror network, including Hamas and Hezbollah. His remarks come after Trump suggested Iran could retain some ballistic missiles and has largely avoided publicly demanding action against its proxy forces.
The apparent disconnect comes as negotiations face their first major test, with Iran refusing to discuss its missile program, rejecting key nuclear inspection demands, and insisting it will maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz—raising fresh doubts over whether Trump’s controversial deal can survive.
