Holocaust Museum blasts Tim Walz for Nazi-era Anne Frank comparison to ICE crackdown on illegal aliens

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum forcefully rejected remarks made by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz after he drew a comparison between federal immigration enforcement in his state and the experience of Anne Frank, the Jewish teenager whose diary became one of the most enduring testimonies of the Holocaust.

In a public statement posted Monday on X, the museum said the analogy crossed a clear moral and historical line, emphasizing that the Holocaust was a state sponsored campaign of extermination that cannot be likened to present day political disputes or law enforcement actions.

“Anne Frank was hunted and murdered because she was Jewish,” the museum wrote. “Using her story as a political metaphor distorts history and is especially offensive at a time when antisemitism is rising.”

Walz made the comments during a press appearance focused on fear within immigrant communities amid heightened enforcement activity by the Department of Homeland Security under an initiative known as Operation Metro Surge.

The operation has drawn national attention following the fatal shootings of ICU nurse Alex Pretti and Renee Good, both American citizens, during incidents tied to the broader enforcement effort.

While addressing the issue, Walz referenced The Diary of a Young Girl, describing it as a children’s book and suggesting that a similar narrative would someday be written about Minnesota.

He said children were now remaining indoors out of fear and claimed that a new story would emerge documenting what he portrayed as their lived experience.

Anne Frank was a Jewish teenager who spent more than two years in hiding from Nazi persecution in the Netherlands during World War II.

She was later captured and murdered in a concentration camp. Her diary is widely regarded as a singular historical document detailing the systematic targeting and destruction of Jewish life in Europe.

Jewish leaders and critics responded by noting that Walz’s remarks omitted critical context.

As of now, Walz has not issued a retraction or apology addressing the museum’s criticism or the concerns raised by Jewish groups, leaving the controversy unresolved as debate over his remarks continues.
