IDF chief calls for unity and wider enlistment on Memorial Day

Army chief pushes broader enlistment as Israel marks sacrifice of fallen

World Israel News Staff

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir used Israel’s Memorial Day ceremony at the Western Wall to call for all sectors of society—including the haredi community—to share the burden of military service.

Marking the sacrifice of 25,648 fallen since 1860, including 172 over the past year, Zamir stressed that Israel faces ongoing threats on multiple fronts and requires broader national participation to ensure its security.

He highlighted the heroism of soldiers who stood against terrorists on October 7, saying their legacy demands unity and responsibility from the entire nation. President Isaac Herzog echoed the message, honoring the fallen while emphasizing Israel’s strength, resilience, and commitment to defend its people.

“Here, at the foot of the Western Wall, we remember all the fallen and the command they left us: to stand together, for the security of the people and the peace of the land,” Zamir said.
