IDF: Gaza Civil Defense spokesman is Hamas operative

Mahmoud Bassal, a key source for global war reporting, is a longtime Hamas member, Israeli military intelligence reveals.

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Sunday that Mahmoud Bassal, widely cited in international media as the spokesman for Gaza’s Civil Defense, is an operative within Hamas’ military wing, the Israeli news website Ynet reported.

According to IDF intelligence, Bassal has served in various combat and intelligence roles within Hamas since joining the group in 2005.

The revelation, based on documents seized during operations in Gaza, raises further questions about the reliability of casualty reports and claims coming from Gaza’s official institutions, many of which Israel has long asserted are controlled or heavily influenced by Hamas.

“Bassal’s materials receive global media exposure and have caused a severe distortion of the reality on the ground,” the IDF said in a statement.

The military accused him of “falsely attributing war crimes to Israel and presenting fabricated data,” framing his activities as part of Hamas’ broader psychological warfare and propaganda strategy.

The IDF published three intelligence documents that name Bassal in different Hamas military capacities. In one, he is listed as a cell head in Hamas intelligence’s “Fifth Brigade: Eye of Goliath.”

Another refers to him as a “keeper of the order,” while a third describes him as a deputy platoon commander.

The IDF also noted that Bassal serves in the Zeitoun Battalion of the Gaza City Brigade, one of five brigades within the Hamas military structure.

The documents indicate Bassal formally joined Hamas on January 29, 2005. He reportedly became a soldier in 2013 and was promoted to the rank of officer in 2020.

Throughout the war that began on October 7, 2023, Bassal has issued hundreds of statements to global media outlets, frequently providing casualty figures and accusations against the IDF.

Israel has repeatedly warned that such information is often unverified, infamously in the Al-Ahli Hospital incident, and may reflect Hamas messaging rather than independent or neutral assessments.

The IDF noted that its concerns were previously based on the assumption that most civil institutions in Gaza, including the Civil Defense, operate under Hamas control — whether willingly or under duress.

Sunday’s revelations, the military said, confirm that Bassal is not merely influenced by Hamas but is an active participant in its operations.

“These documents prove unequivocally: Mahmoud Saber Tafesh Bassal is an operative in the Hamas terrorist organization,” the IDF said, urging media outlets worldwide to approach information coming from Gaza’s civil authorities with heightened scrutiny.

Israel has previously spotlighted what it calls “dual-hat” roles among Gaza officials and journalists who simultaneously serve in Hamas military or intelligence roles while presenting themselves as civilians.

The IDF concluded its statement with a call for greater caution in reporting. “We urge media organizations to verify their sources and avoid spreading disinformation that ultimately serves terrorist objectives,” the military said.
