The Iranian President conveyed the Islamic Republic’s commitment to continue bearing the “high cost” of fighting Israel.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that the Islamic world is duty-bound to fight against Israel regardless of the cost.
“We believe that the world of Islam should resist (Israel) to uphold the Palestinian people’s rights and is also duty bound to pay the cost,” Rouhani said in a meeting with Chairman of the Palestinian National Council, Salim Zanoun. The Palestinian National Council is the legislative body of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Rouhani and Zanoun were meeting in Tehran on the sidelines of the Sixth International Conference in Support of the Palestinian Intifada.
Despite Rouhani’s contention that the Islamic world is obligated to fight against the Jewish state, other Muslim countries in the region, including Saudi Arabia, have opened up to Israel, at least unofficially.
Speaking on behalf of the regime in Tehran, Rouhani conveyed his government’s commitment to continue fighting Israel.
“The Iranian people have paid a high cost for supporting the Palestinians and opposing the Zionist regime of Israel’s actions, however they will continue their support.”
Part of the costs borne by the Islamic Republic in fighting Israel has been its financial and military support for the terrorist groups of Hamas and Hezbollah, both of which are at war with Israel.
