Iran launches ‘advanced and smart rockets’ during military drill

Iran has again test-fired new rockets. How will the US respond?

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) on Monday commenced with a large-scale military exercise during which the forces launched “advanced and smart rockets with pinpoint accuracy.”

The first phase of the three-day war game, codenamed “Payambar-e Azam 11” (The Great Prophet), kicked off in Dasht-e Kavir in central Iran under the motto of “Presentation of Power and Sustainable Security,” the Tasnim news agency reported.

Various units of the IRGC Ground Force are participating in the military drills, including the artillery, air defense, drone, infantry and air force units.

Details on the type of rocket or the results of the launches were not revealed in the report.

On Saturday, General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the IRGC Ground Force Brigadier, announced that the military drills will be staged in two phases, adding that advanced rockets will be test-fired. He also stressed the importance of the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) by the IRGC Ground Force, saying that drones are employed “in all the missions of the force,” including reconnaissance, combat and suicide missions.

Iran’s military doctrine states that the public display of offensive abilities could serve as a deterrence.

These rocket tests took place just weeks after the US announced it was putting the Islamic Republic “on notice” after Iran test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile, while President Donald Trump slammed new sanctions on several Iranian entities and officials tied to Iran’s missile industry with new sanctions.

Iran’s military routinely holds exercises throughout the year.
