Iran launches missiles at US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait

Iran accused Washington of violating the temporary ceasefire agreement reached last week, arguing that the U.S. strikes and reimposition of sanctions on Iranian oil rendered key provisions of the agreement ineffective.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched missiles and drones at 85 U.S. military targets in Bahrain and Kuwait early Wednesday, retaliating after American forces carried out a sweeping campaign of strikes against Iran on Tuesday night.

According to Iranian state media, the attacks were launched in response to Tuesday’s U.S. operation, during which U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces struck more than 80 Iranian targets, including air defense systems, radar sites, and Revolutionary Guard naval assets.

The U.S. military said the strikes were carried out after Iran attacked three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, calling Tehran’s actions “unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire.”

Iran, meanwhile, accused Washington of violating the temporary ceasefire agreement reached last week, arguing that the U.S. strikes and the reimposition of sanctions on Iranian oil rendered key provisions of the agreement ineffective.

Kuwait reported that debris from intercepted missiles and drones damaged part of the country’s power transmission network.

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said several transmission lines were knocked out of service by shrapnel but stressed that electricity and water services remained uninterrupted. Emergency crews began repair work in coordination with security authorities.

The attacks prompted a sharp condemnation from Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry, which said Iran’s “repeated attacks” constituted “a flagrant violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty, a direct threat to its security and stability, and to the safety of its citizens and residents.”

The ministry added that Kuwait’s “security, sovereignty, and safety are a red line that cannot be crossed” and reaffirmed the country’s right to “take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and protect its security and stability.”

In a separate statement, Kuwait also condemned Iran’s attack on neighboring Bahrain, calling it “a flagrant violation of its sovereignty and a direct threat to its security, stability, and the safety of its citizens and residents.” It reaffirmed Kuwait’s “firm and unwavering support” for Bahrain and its territorial integrity.

The attacks drew condemnation from elsewhere in the Gulf as well.

Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the president of the United Arab Emirates, said Iran’s attacks on commercial shipping and neighboring Gulf states demonstrated that Tehran remained unwilling to de-escalate.

“Iran’s attacks on Qatari and Saudi commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and the repeated aggression against our sisterly states, Bahrain and Kuwait, are a clear sign that Tehran remains unable to commit to de-escalation and turning the page of the war,” Gargash wrote on X.

Also on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said he believes the temporary U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding is effectively over, calling it “a waste of time” after the latest exchange of strikes.

The attacks mark the most serious escalation between the United States and Iran since the ceasefire was reached.
