Moscow and Tehran signed a contract for the delivery of five battalion sets of S-300 PMU1 air defense missile systems in 2007.
The first cargo of missiles used by the Russian S-300 defense system, which was sent by Russia to Iran in April, has recently arrived in the Islamic Republic.
Commander of Iran’s Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base, Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli, announced on Sunday that the Iran-Russia contract on the supply of several S-300 missile defense systems to Tehran will be completed by March 2017, Iran’s Fars news reported Monday.
“The supply of the S-300 missile defense system is moving on its natural course,” Esmayeeli said.
A battalion of the S-300 missile defense system was showed off in military parades in Tehran in April, without displaying the missiles.
Esmayeeli said that Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base has deployed the S-300 missile shield.
Moscow and Tehran signed a contract for the delivery of five battalion sets of S-300 PMU1 air defense missile systems in 2007.
The recently-delivered missiles can be used in the S-300 PMU2 defense shield, which is known as the most advanced and deadliest missile defense system in the S-300 family.
Israel and the US have voiced opposition to Moscow’s sale of the advanced systems to Tehran, ultimately to no avail.
