Iran reports progress in talks as US military pressure mounts

Negotiations between Iran and the United States in Geneva concluded Tuesday with Tehran reporting progress toward a potential agreement, while Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei simultaneously issued new warnings toward Washington.

Speaking amid the Geneva negotiations, Khamenei said Iran’s missile capabilities remain non-negotiable. “The issue of the type of Iran’s missiles and their range belongs to the Iranian people, and the Americans have nothing to do with it,” he said, adding, “The Americans know that if they make a mistake, what future awaits them.”

The comments came amid ongoing U.S. military deployments in the region and the continued movement of the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier toward the Middle East.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the negotiations produced tangible progress, telling Iranian media that Tehran and Washington had reached understandings on “key principles.” According to Araghchi, both sides will now work on drafting possible agreement documents and exchange proposals, though several issues remain unresolved.

“We reached agreements on the main issues,” Araghchi was quoted as saying, adding that “positive progress” had been achieved compared to the previous round of talks. He reiterated that Iran seeks nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and insisted Tehran has never pursued nuclear weapons.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, whose country mediated the indirect negotiations, described the talks as constructive. “The indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States in Geneva concluded today with good progress toward identifying shared objectives and relevant technical issues,” he said. “The spirit of our meetings was constructive.”

Albusaidi added that serious efforts were made to define guiding principles for a final agreement and praised the contribution of International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi, while noting that “much work remains ahead” before the next round of negotiations.

While negotiators advanced technical discussions, the talks unfolded under the shadow of an overwhelming U.S. military buildup in the region, highlighting the pressure surrounding efforts to reach an agreement.
