Iran and Syria have signed an agreement to enhance military and technical cooperation during Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami’s two-day visit to Damascus, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported.

Hatami landed Sunday in Syria with a military delegation for a series of meetings with the country’s top echelon, including President Bashar al Assad, to discuss further strengthening of ties between the two allies.

“Syria is moving out of crisis and entering the reconstruction phase,” the Iranian defense minister stated, the Tasmin report said.

Hatami signed the bilateral agreement after talks with Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad and Defense Minister General Ali Abdullah Ayyoub.

Ayyoub praised Iran for supporting his country in what he said was the war against terrorism, referring to the Syrian civil war that began in 2011.

In defiance of the US and Israel, he stressed that Syria and Iran will not allow others to harm their close relations.

Israel, backed by the Trump administration, has repeatedly stated that it will not tolerate an Iranian presence in Syria.
