Iran threatens to attack Ukraine over cooperation with Israel

Senior Iranian lawmaker accuses Ukraine of assisting Israel, says Kyiv is now a legitimate target for attacks by the Islamic Republic.

A senior Iranian lawmaker hinted that the Islamic Republic could strike Ukraine over its alleged assistance to Israel during the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

On Saturday, MP Ebrahim Azizi, the head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Commission, accused Kyiv of aiding Israel, claiming that under the United Nations Charter Ukraine is now a “legitimate target” for Iranian military action.

“By providing drone support to the Israeli regime, failed Ukraine has effectively become involved in the War and, under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, has turned its entire territory into a legitimate target for Iran,” Azizi wrote on his X account.

Azizi provided no details or proof of Ukrainian “drone support” to Israel.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his government had dispatched military specialists to the Middle East to assist the US and its Gulf allies in intercepting Iranian drones.

Zelensky said that a number of countries in the region had reached out to Kyiv for assistance.

“In just a few days, Iran has launched over 800 missiles of various types and more than 1,400 attack drones,” Zelensky wrote on X.

“It is Iranian drones and missiles that pose the main threat to free navigation, destabilizing global prices for oil, petroleum products, and gas.”

“Ukraine can contribute to protecting lives and stabilizing the situation,” Zelensky continued.

However, the Ukrainian president made no specific mention of aid to Israel, and it is unclear whether Ukraine’s efforts to bolster drone interception operations are limited to Gulf states or include Israel as well.

Over the past four years, Russia has relied heavily on Iranian-made Shahed drones for its war against Ukraine, the same type of unmanned aircraft used in the Islamic Republic’s strikes on US facilities and allies since February 28.
